Progress Report: Final words and References

SABONET has put in place a regional team of botanical expertise with the technical capacity to monitor, evaluate, and document the exceptionally rich botanical heritage of southern Africa. In the remaining months of SABONET’s lifespan, participating institutions and individuals will be challenged to produce tangible evidence of the contribution that capacity building has made towards regional development. In short, we hope to measure our success according to the number and standard of trained plant diversity specialists, quality and usefulness of publications produced, eminence and size of a regional plant database, and the production of a concept document for a new project. By successfully implementing and completing End-user Workshops, Threatened Plants Programmes and Internships, we will take a huge step towards achieving impact and laying the foundation for a SABONET II.

These initiatives were made possible through generous funding provided to the SABONET Project by the Global Environmental Facility (GEF) through the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP). A special thanks to Jonathan Timberlake and Alan Paton for sharing their vision with project management. Our appreciation to Nyasha Rukazhanga-Noko and Lorna Davis for respectively applying their administration and financial management skills superbly to implement these initiatives successfully. We also wish to thank all the SABONET National Coordinators for their participation to make the new initiatives such a success.
