Angola

SABONET-Angola was co-ordinated by staff attached to the Agostinho Neto University, where the Luanda Herbarium (LUAI) is housed. The LUAI herbarium collections are currently being computerised using PRECIS (The National Herbarium of Pretoria (PRE) Computerised Information System), which has been provided by the National Botanical Institute of South Africa (NBI, now SANBI) under the auspices of SABONET. The Poaceae collection has been completely computerised under the auspices of SABONET, by staff supported by SABONET. As part of SABONET's networking activities, links have also been made to the Lubango Herbarium (LUBA) in the southwestern corner of the country. The only other herbarium in Angola, the Huambo Herbarium (LUA), is currently not functional. The LUA collection was rescued and transferred to the LUAI in 1995, where it is currently being stored temporarily for safekeeping. Prof. Esperança Costa has been spearheading SABONET's efforts in Angola since the inception of the Project in 1996 to its end in June 2004.
